Worm Vermin Culture for your Gardens By now, most people know about the Black Gold, that is the extreme organic power of worm castings. If you're just now finding out, adding worms to your compost or garden is an excellent way to naturally fertilize and keep your soil rich and fresh! Worms will break down new addings to your compost pile up to 56 times faster and their waste produces fertilizer to enhance your soil even more. Many do not know that their newly built home site are devoid of organic matter unless the original purchaser took matters to control this. I think if i remember correctly that it takes about 9 years for just one real inch of useable top soil to be replenished. That is with your efforts. Without your effort, it is longer. The home building companies go into an undisturbed lot and normally rip out as many trees as possible and literally church the good top soil layer down and bring the lower layers up to the top. Heavy equipment is used to build homes, many construction workers vehicles are parked on the entire lot, large heavy dumpsters are stored on site to get rid of the mega amounts of debris and all this does extreme damage to your lawn before it is a lawn. Then at the end of construction you are left with a very compacted layer of soil that is void of nutrients and organic matter. Not much is going to grow to its full potential in that area except grass and weeds. Do you have an uncontrolled weed problem even after taking measures? This might be why. What you need to do is either speak with your home builder prior to construction with physical, in person check ups on the property about every 3 days to see if they are treating your property with the care you asked and are paying for. Typically, about 2-3 feet of soil is compacted during the worse compaction from automobiles, human foot traffic, heavy items and heavy machinery, but only 6" can be enough soil compaction to kill an 80 year old Live Oak tree. Compacted soils do not allow water permeation or root penetration from plants, shrubs, and trees and of course your favorite tropicals. This will either kill what was already there or prevent newly planted trees, shrubs and garden plants from growing. Sometimes they don't make it at all. What can you do? There has been much research on this topic in the last century. Finally after coming up with many ways, the best is found to be to till the soil at least to the depth of compaction. This will allows your vegetation to grow. There is a tool to measure the depth of compacted soil. It is called a penetrometer. It is a probing tool that is easy to use. Simply push down until either it tells you it has hit the compacted area. They are accurate. Hire a certified arborist to help you if you don't have access to one of these tools. Once you find the depth, it is imperative to get that soil loose again.
So what do worms have to do with this? Worms are the most beneficial living organism to have alive in your lawn and flower beds. There are no plants that I know of that do not benefit from worms and their casting. To have these worm creatures breeding in your dirt will give super amounts of organic matter, aerate the soil so water can get to the plants and tree roots and it allow roots to grow out and breathe making the plants and trees able to uptake the nutrients in the soil freely. So, what worms are the right worms to use? any worm that will live and breed in your area. Or you can use pre-created worm castings to amend the soil. In time, the native worms of your area will come to live and stay. They do need organic matter to feed from, so make sure to make use of your composting items and fertilizers. This is where soil Ph comes in. If your soil pH is off to the vegetation you have growing, the plants, trees and shrubs will not be able to uptake the fertilizer and this can cause salt build up or burn your plant's roots.
