Hyophorbe lagenicaulis - Unique Swollen Trunked Bottle Palm Tree Bottle Palm (Hyophorbe lagenicaulis) - Hardy Zone 8b/9 -11. Sadly these aren't as cold hardy as other palms but can withstand mild freezes. Should be kept from frosts, easily protected with frost cloth. These are wonderfully unique palms that look like no other. They can however take light frosts and very short periods of freeze, but the current leaves will become brown, spotted or crispy. The tree may not die unless left for extended hours in those harsh temperatures but is recommended to be kept from them. When more mature, the base is colored cement gray and is swollen, eventually narrowing towards the green crownshaft, emitting its somewhat wide recurving pinnate 'feather' fronds. Easily (and commonly) grown in containers for years and make an excellent specimen to show off! They are pretty fast growing and if you're a collector and don't have this, you're missing out! They only reach heights of about 10-12 feet so this is one that you can enjoy for many years! I don't think you would go wrong to have this tree to show off on your property or collection. They can be grown in full sun if given enough water or a low light position. If grown in shade, reduce their watering schedule as they are prone to root rot at the seedling stage. Not a difficult palm to grow and certainly well worth any diligence given! Make an excellent patio or indoor parlor palm! Mature Bottle Palm Trees Pictured
