African Oil Palm Tree
- Used for its oil producing seed around the Globe
African Oil Palm (Elaeis guineensis)
- Be the only kid on
the block to have one of these! These palms are very easy to
grow and are rapid growing. They are cold hardy to zone 8b (about 24°
F) and are stout trunked that flare out at the bottom.
Though there are male and female trees, a single tree will produce viable seeds.
The fronds are feathery in appearance and truly bring out the tropical look to
any location. They grow to heights of 30ft. and adapt to most any soil type and grow best planted in full sun.
Besides being part of the African Parrot's diet, their fresh seeds produce a natural lubricant used throughout
the world in many products. During the cold weather it is best to not water them much until summer
growth begins and then water very heavily. They are salt spray tolerant as well and
will grow without problems near beach side areas. Since they are a large growing
palm, they will need room to grow, please keep this in mind before planting in a
permanent location. Limited!
