Peltandra Virginica Arrow Arum Aroid |
The Perfect Bog plant!
Arrow Arum - (Peltandra virginica) Zones 5-9 Extremely Cold Hardy Here's a very cool and hard to find aroid plant for your water garden! These little beauties grow to heights of 2 - 3 feet and usually have 5-10 leaves each corm by mid summer. Resembling a member of the Alocasia family, they will cluster and produce a bushy arrowhead shrub looking plant in your pond or water garden or bog area. The bottom of the succulent stalks are sometimes purple and turn more green up the stem as it reaches the leaf. The leaves grow to about 10-12" long and half as wide. They bloom in late spring to late summer and produce a blackish berry that can be germinated to produce more plants but the water foul will eat up the berries like a delicacy if they find them first. They can be grown in full sun to deep shade but do need lots of water and wet soil. You can and should grow them directly in the Koi pond or water garden. What a great addition this could make in your collection or pondscape! Makes an Excellent indoor potted plant due to its low light tolerance but must be kept moist. I had to battle the alligators for the original stock of these! They are becoming more and more rare as wetlands are being developed for land use and housing projects. It is not invasive and for some reason isn't very widely known. Still, if you're an aroid lover, this will satisfy your taste buds! I say that these are the perfect bog plant since they grow directly in water and need moist growing conditions. Sun or shade, they like it all.
