Hardwood Trees and Woody Ornamentals

Shade trees make a landscape feel more like home than a barren field. They add space for wildlife and will live to serve your children's children. Kids love trees, I know I did when I was young. I liked to climb them and still do from time to time when I'm feeling good. Most trees are hardy and fast growing to create a shady place in your yard. Trees are landmarks to some areas. We have a large very old Live Oak tree near our home that has been around for at least 300 years. There's a memorial under it for The William Bartram Trail. A botanist who traveled Florida and the southern states in the 1700's of this great nation identifying, drawing and recording them in a book. Many of the plants and trees that are native to Florida were named by Mr. Bartram. The tree pictured under the Live Oak Seedlings section is massive and its branches are massive & covered in dense furry resurrection fern along with Spanish moss hanging from it. It's a wonderful landmark and I hope it lives another 400 years! Thankfully, it wasn't hurt during the hurricanes of 2004. Not sure how, but it's still standing and escaped unscathed! It is a great testimony to the Live Oak's strong wood characteristic.

Our trees are grown under natural hammock and in full sun depending on age and type of tree. Our selection of trees and saplings will outgrow this and generations to come. Plant trees! Winter is gone, and planting now will give an advantage in spring. When they begin growing they won't know that they've been moved. Make sure that you do not plant your tree to close to buildings or a structure or the roots and branches could invade the area. When  oaks mature, the trees produce acorns which drop seasonally that deer, bear, small animals and a large variety of birds love to eat. If you do not find something that your are looking for, please email us and see if we can find it for you!

Do your Part! Whether you buy from us or someone else, plant a tree and keep your eyes opened and keep up with the pest alerts from the University of Florida Website about potential harmful insect and diseases that are bombarding our world! Help preserve these trees! They are among the family of Lauraceae that is now being attacked by a two millimeter long tiny Ambrosia beetle that originates from Asia. Also in this family is the Avocado.

.African Rose Mallow - Cold Hardy Zone 8b - Hibiscus acetosella - Originating from Africa, this one is known by many common names such as Red Leaf Hibiscus, Maple Sugar Plant, False Roselle and Marsh Mallow. The African Rose mallow is treasured by many for its colorfully rich, deep red Japanese maple shaped leaves and ease of growing care. It is common to eat the fresh young leaves, raw in salads or cooked in stir fry dishes. Some have said that it can be a substitute for the true Roselle for making a tart cranberry-like flavored drink that is enjoyed by south American natives.

The flowers are lighter than the plant hues with pinks and deeper reds and subtly blend in with its leaves. When maintained, this woody ornamental can be very bushy producing a showy blooming fest all summer long. The flowers open up to about 4-5 inch diameter, pinkish hued contrasting to very dark towards the center bud. They are very pretty and the over all colors stand out among the green plants or any color background.

If left to itself, it can become leggy producing sporadic blooms. It is better to prune this plant during the growing season. It can withstand winter's bite very well in zones 8 and up without suffering damage if grown in the understory. If left exposed to the freezes, the leaves can be burned but the plant will not die. It can be grown successfully in a container for its lifespan and brought in to be protected for harsh winter areas. It appreciates the higher light and brought shade which makes it an interesting patio plant.

Grevillea Robusta (Silk Oak Tree, Silky Oak Tree) Cold Hardy Zone 8a - This is one of my favorite full sized evergreens that are not talked about enough. The Grevillea Robusta has even been successful as an indoor bonsai and due to its fast growth rate, would make fun project! This size is a perfect start for that. The Silk Oak hail from Australia and have been grown in Florida, California, Arizona and other parts of America for decades. We had two large trees in Daytona Beach when I was growing up, so I know they can stand some colder temperatures without death. These trees are able to stand temperatures to about 18-20 degrees before death. They prefer moist soils but are drought tolerant once established and adapt to most types of soil excluding salty conditions. The Silk Oak has often been planted as a hedgerow, specimen and for windbreaks. Reaching a height of 75 - 100 feet with a 25-30 foot spread, Silk-Oak is pyramidal to oval in shape, eventually developing a few heavy horizontal limbs and a thick trunk. The fern-like, light gray-green leaves are silvery beneath & are accented by large clusters of bright golden-orange flowers in spring. They have been grown in Hawaii at altitudes of 3000ft. The inflorescence begins in spring and rivals that of the Hedichium gingers! These trees are used for their timber since they are an extremely fast growing hardwood. You can plant this now and in 5 years have a huge tree that will not only resemble a giant tree fern but will give you and your family a shady place to enjoy during the summer heat. This seedling should be about 4-8 feet tall by the end of season 2005 and are easy to transplant, I have no deaths at any stage of their lives. They should be kept in filtered sun until they are established in your environment and then acclimated into full sun if growing for specimen. These showy trees will definitely add a colorful and eye catching piece to your atmosphere!

Coral Berry - Ardisia Crenata - Zones 7a-10b What a great plant to have from the Myrsinaceae plant family! These plants grow to heights of 3-6 feet tall with serrated short, dark, shiny, green leaves. Can be pruned to stay very bushy or turned into a shrub. This plant can withstand very hard freezes but may die back to long periods of freeze only to return again when the weather is warm. Most likely they will not be affected and will have their red berries all winter long! They almost always have clusters of red berries all over them throughout the year. This is a VERY hardy plant that anyone can grow. The flowers are white or pink and sometime go unnoticed but produce clusters of showy, bright red berry that stays red for months and usually last throughout the winter. They will reseed naturally and propagate in that manner. Can be container grown or placed in the yard. What a beautiful different plant to have. Likes bright light but can and often grows well in 80% shade. They prefer rich, moist soil that is high in organic matter. These will be shipped bare root and they may go through a droop shock (normal for these) but will come back in no time and will not stop growing for you! They transplant very easy! You just can't have too many of these! Make an excellent looking specimen or hedge row where ever your imagination places them!

American Florida Holly Tree - (Ilex opaca) - A small to medium sized tree. Leaves alternate, persistent, simple, 2-4 inches longa and 1-2 inches wide. Leaf margin is wavy with stout, stiff, sharp spines. Fruit is a spherical red berrylike drupe about .25 inches in diameter, each containing several 1 seeded nutlets. Bark is Gray and thin with wart like structures. Range from Massachusetts to Florida to Texas, Illinois.
Fruit is used extensively by some songbirds and thrashers. Many have seen the branches and berries of this tree creatively formed into wreaths, mantle, table and wall decor during Christmas time. A true Christmas tree!

Texas Sage (Leucophyllum frutescens)  - Hardy to zone 7a and higher - These are wonderful cold hardy and hot tolerant plants that have silvery blue felt-like small leaves and need to be planted in full sun. It also is called a barometer bush due to its heavy blooming of pink, white, pale blue or lavender flowers just after a good rain. They will bloom all summer long if watered well. These are drought tolerant and will take any amount of heat given. Great landscape piece for a hedge or shrub plant that grows 8 feet tall and 4 ft wide if allowed. They may lose a few leaves during weather below 5 degrees but generally do not. The plant for sale is growing in a 3 gallon container but needs to be transplanted into larger or ground. Very easy to grow plant. Needs much watering in well drained soil, but once transplanted and established, back off the water. Have container ready or area upon receiving plants open package carefully.

Wax Myrtle (Myrica cerifera) - A semi-evergreen where the winters are frosty but here it is evergreen all year. This popular tree has an attractive rounded form and is commonly used in landscaping as both a small tree or kept pruned as shrubs. Wax myrtle is uncommonly beautiful and has so many desirable attributes it is sure to find a place in your landscape's scene. The leaves are narrow, gray-green to yellow-green and aromatic when crushed. If you look at the leaf surface under magnification you'll see that it is covered with tiny yellow glands. These trees/shrubs can take Florida's extreme heat to New Jersey's extreme cold and can live in dry places as well as water filled swamps. Although it does live in dryer condition it prefers wet feet. They grow to heights of about 25 feet but can be trimmed and kept as a hedge. Commonly seen here in Florida around hospitals and doctors offices it is one of central Florida's most favorite landscaping plants. It is even salt tolerant and can live at beachside residences. The lighting is just as wide as it moisture conditions and can thrive in full sun or filtered light. They will produce colonies if the new 'suckers' are not removed. If left to grow naturally, it will usually not form a very uniform look, but when pruned or guided, its can be made into a spectacular specimen!

Camphor Tree (Cinnamomum camphora) - Zone 8 and up. These evergreen trees are known for their useful camphor extraction as a curing balm to help heal with infectious insect bites ands crapes and cuts, scars and other viral, fungal, bacterial skin disorders. It can also be used to treat pain. The trees grow into large shade trees that reach 50-150 feet high! Very fast growing, they like sandy well drained soil. The flowers produce the camphor fragrance and the leaves are used in aroma therapy in some cultures. In 5 years this will be one of your largest shade trees in your yard! A very rewarding tree to watch grow.

Golden Rain Tree - Zones 5-10. Golden rain trees are very cold hardy growing 30-40 feet tall. Their fern like leaves over lap top give a lace appearance. They are a shade producing tree with beautiful flowers... twice! First the yellow flowers which are very showy and then the red seed pods which are showy as well. They will leave a mess after flowering, but can be handled quite easily with a rake. These trees are not evergreen but are very fast growers and live longer than our lifetime. Tolerates drought and long periods of rain. You will get a flush of colors all growing seasons long! They will thrive in full sun to shade but not as fast growing in shade but still faster than most none the less.

Southern Live Oak Tree Seedling - Zones 7-10. A shade tree known for its evergreen leaves throughout the winter. With large leaves that curl towards the center and many branches spreading out over a 50+ ft radius (when allowed to grow that large), these great trees grow slow but steady and with proper fertilization will shade the piece of property before you are aware of it. The Live Oak prefers full sun to partial shade but does best ion full sun creating that partial shade in your area. It is best plant them in full sun to reach optimal size. These are slower growing than most in its species which makes it a much stronger wood and can be pruned and maintained to be able to to endure high hurricane force winds. This one in photo endured all three 2004 hurricane direct hits from Frances, Charlie and Jeanne and didn't lose a limb! Wish I could say that about our large water and laurel oak trees. The seedlings are from this historical oak. Seedlings differ from cultivars which make up about 90% of propagated trees primarily sold these days. Seedlings can turn out to be any shape tree but most certainly the classic shape pictured in this tree whereas cultivars are grown to be a more decurrent shape and grown for less room the urban forest environment of modern times.

Another aspect of the cultivar tree saplings is that they are grown to have one main leader or trunk with fewer limbs (or branches) in order to make stronger, more stable trees for an Urban environment. If you think about it, at least here in Florida or any other fast growing community, just about every place will one day be an urban environment. Since it takes trees many years to reach their maximum size, START NOW by planting one in your yard!

Cherry Laurel Tree Zones 7-10. These trees produce the famous cherry wood also used to create beautiful furniture. Fast growing as well, the branches don't spread out as wide as the live oaks but do produce a large area of shade and add a statement to your landscape. They will produce red seeds that resemble tiny cherries. The leaves are not as wide and a little lighter green with a shine. The bark is a lighter color than most trees with a heavy texture similar to that of the live oak tree but not as course. One of my favorite trees!

     Cherry Laurel

                    $0.00 - 2 Cherry Laurel seedlings 6-9" tall

Water Oak TreeZones 7-10. Water oaks are fast growing oaks that spread wide shade and are the easiest to grow of the oaks. Their roots spread out just under the surface of the ground. Their leaves are large elliptical dark green. The bark is very shallow compared to other types of oak trees. They will live in standing water and wetland areas. A very fast growing tree that will produce shade in no time at all!
