Ginger Plants

Hedychium Gingers

Ginger plants are a most eloquent plant with many varieties, sizes, bloom shapes & colors. Most Ginger plants originate from Asian lands and are tropical in nature. They are and have been growing in the American temperate climates since the early days of the pioneers. There are about 1000 species of gingers & are classed in the Zingiberaceae family. Included but not limited to the genus are; Boesenbergia, Alpinia, Curcuma, Costus varzearum, Etlingera, Globba, Hedychium, Kaempferia, Mantisia, Renealmia, Riedelia coralina, Smithiatris supraneeani, Sceptor, Tapinocheilos & Zingiber. There are over 1000 known species of the Zingiberaceae ginger plant family and I hope that new finds will be brought to our attention as our favorites grow well in our gardens. Gingers are perennial plants that propagate via horizontal tuberous rhizomes just under the soil line with smaller anchoring feeder roots and do their best in rich organic moist soil and partial shade. Some species will grow directly in water and live in a bog situation without root rot while others will not tolerate extreme wet feet conditions. Zingiberaceae are used for medicine, as cooking spices throughout the world while the others are enjoyed for their intricate God created beauty. They are mainly a low maintenance plant and once they get going, will treat you with years of glorified colorful blooms and leafy stalks. One of the most popular is an ornamental known as the Hedychium species. Growing to heights of 5-7 feet tall and emitting a myriad of different types of colors and petal arrangements these are easy to grow and easy to obtain. If left to themselves over a long period of time (such as 5-10 years) without attention in optimal growing conditions, they will most certainly cover the area with multitudes of plants. But if they are attended to and or even grown inside a root barrier, these plants will remain pretty much where you would like them to be without problems. The bi-sexual flowers also propagate via seeds if the pollinated but my personal experience is that they are easier to propagate via the rhizome as seeds can be difficult to germinate if present at all.

Similar to other cold hardy tropicals, they are not frost hardy (but will not die) and will die back to the tuber or rhizome for the winter. Some varieties (like curcuma) will even go dormant under 45 degree weather. But the rhizomes that are protected by soil and or a thin layer of mulch are usually cold hardy to at least zero degrees and will be among the earliest plants to rise from their hibernation when the weather warms up for the season. The new shoots spring forth from the rhizome as larger/longer rhizomes develop each growing season. Each species has its own growing habit, but will usually begin blooming from mid summer to late September in the warm temperate zones. Curcuma is one that only blooms once per year, per plant and then fades for the season. They are well worth the effort in that the blooms usually last a few weeks and are of a delicate, soft but vivid array of petals that begin at the base of the plant and grow upward. Small 'cups' nestled under the larger flower petals emerge first and the longer crepe paper detailed petals follow giving the wide leaves their royal finishing touch. Some curcuma leaves are green while others have deep colored, eye appealing midribs to suffice our beauty seeking minds until they do finally bloom. The flowers are usually low and attract honey bees and other insects and hold a small amount of water. Curcuma gingers make an excellent low front plant or a mid-point plant where there is a need to cover a small space. All the Hedychium gingers can grow in full sun to partial and even full shade. The more sun, the more moisture in the soil is required. They will also grow faster in full sun than in shade but do very well in shady positions.

White Butterfly Ginger -  Zone 5b - 11. (see pic above) White Butterfly Ginger is considered one of the most attractive of all gingers. Grows best in semi-shaded areas but can live well in full sun. Can be grown directly in standing water such as your pond. It bears clusters of snow white fragrant butterfly flowers. Fast growing when cared for properly. Easily grown in containers or in the yard. Grow it for the look and grow it for the herbal use. Looks good along the fence. This Ginger grows to heights of 3'-7'. Leaves are lance-shaped and sharp-pointed, 8-24" long and 2-5" wide. From midsummer through autumn, the stalks are topped with 6-12"-long clusters of wonderfully fragrant white flowers that look like a cluster of delicate butterflies sitting on the plants. The flowers eventually give way to showy bright red seed pods if pollinated. They are cold hardy to 13 degrees and if hit by frost or freeze, will come back soon as the season warms.

Peach Butterfly Ginger -  Zone 5b - 11. Some have asked me if this is the "Dr. Moy" ginger. Although the flowers are very similar in color (but not in structure), it doesn't have the variegation in its leaves. A very beautiful natural hybrid found among some others I had growing a few years ago. Like the White Butterfly Ginger, the peach is considered one of the most attractive of all gingers. Grows best in semi-shaded areas, but can live well in full sun when adequate/constant moisture is provided. The stems sometimes will attain a pinkish hue in the bracts and other times remain green. I do not know what causes this or doesn't cause this color variation. Can be grown directly in standing water such as your pond. It bears clusters of snow white fragrant butterfly flowers. This exotic root can also be used for cooking. Fast growing when cared for properly. Easily grown in containers or in the yard. Looks good along the fence. This Ginger grows to heights of 3'-7'. Leaves are lance-shaped and sharp-pointed, 8-24" long and 2-5" wide. From midsummer through autumn, the stalks are topped with 6-12"-long clusters of wonderfully fragrant white flowers with a deep peach middle that resembles butterflies. The flowers eventually give way to showy bright red seed pods if pollinated. They are cold hardy to 13 degrees and if hit by frost or freeze, will be one of the first plants to come back the next warm season with new shoots. Notice the larger bloom in the photo on the left.

Dr. Moy Variegated Butterfly Ginger Plant - Cold Hardy Tropical Foliage! This is one that most collectors know of and is the wonder of the variegated world of gingers.  They produce a beautiful cluster of peach and white colored fragrant blossoms. The best part however is the foliage. It is tall, dark green with white variegated striped and flecked leaves from the new shoots until it reaches 6+ feet tall stature. They can fall over if there is only a couple plants or planted alone, but this is easily remedied by either using a tomato basket or slim stakes and gently tied to them in two or three locations. you can also plant them against a wall or among other sturdier plants to help them stay upright. It's well worth the effort when you see these beauties grow! They are as vigorous as the green forms of butterfly gingers. WE only have a few available at this time and have not offered them before but I think I have enough for our eyes and will make them available as they continue to produce new shoots. They can be container grown or in the ground and do withstand our zone 8b/9 weather easily. They actually seem to be more hardy than other butterfly ginger cultivars. These are all naturally propagated. Very Limited

Curcuma

Zingiberaceae

Curcuma Ginger Sp - Curcuma is a wonderful ginger variety with plants in its genus that are extremely diverse in size & color. I am not sure which curcuma variety this is. It was acquired by accident in a potted plant bought from a nursery a few years ago and decided to propagate itself throughout our plants. That nursery is not around any more to ask for more and so the plants pictured are the plants you will receive. They are very easy to grow and these have mature rhizomes ready for this season's blooming and are growing in one gallon containers. The leaves are all green with a slightly darker appearance along the midrib. Leaves resemble lily type plants and are very corrugated and pleated in appearance.

The flowers grow to heights of about 10 inches max and the flower stems emerge in the same place the leaves do near the base of the plants. This photo was taken about midway through the flowers life span. The flowers are complex and begin with small yellow and green-white cups to a delicate papery looking soft lavender texture similarly as exotic as the poppy flower. There are only a few of these so order now. I have no idea when there will be more. Blooming size plants are usually available until the end of October. These plants seem to be one of the first to die down for the season after steady weather below 45ºF. I've noticed that they are also the last to pop back up when the weather gets warm again in this area but when they do , they're full size in a month. In warmer areas, I am not sure their patterns.
