Will be an edible Shade Tree in No Time! Japanese Loquat Tree (Eriobotrya Japonica) - Zones 7a-11. A Very fast growing evergreen, cold hardy, frost hardy and a beautiful shade tree known for its yellow-orange sweet edible plum fruit and beautiful long, large and wide dark green leaves. The fruit clusters two - three times yearly and the blossoms make beautiful white fragrant flowers attracting butterflies and birds. The leaves are wide and long and provide shade for the yard. These great trees grow extremely fast and with proper fertilization will shade the piece of property in no time. They like full sun to partial shade but is best to plant them in full sun to reach optimal size. These young trees listed here should be 5-10 feet tall or taller by the end of next growing season and should be fruiting the following year. They prefer partially filtered light but will grow well in full sun. Fully mature tree can grow to 30 feet tall and 20 ft wide. Every home should have a couple of these. Kids love to pick and eat their tasty fruit! I always did and still do. They rarely get harmed by frost or cold damage, so much so that in the winter of 2006 Jacksonville and Palm Coast Florida had about 3 nights of lower than normal temperatures. This produced the newest foliage from the trees to brown a few weeks later. The local officials sent samples from various landscapes to the University of Florida for testing of Fire Blight. The results came back negative of any pathogens. It was just that it really got cold. All the trees lives and the only affected parts were the newest foliage. Even the fruit finished ripening and were everywhere in spring. They survived the drought of 2005-2007 that Florida had and actually produced more fruit then I've ever noticed. All the trees and palms did. This must be a defense mechanism built into these plants as survival method. They do not need multiple plants to produce fruit. One will provide you with much fruit! 2 Saplings - One Price!
