This particular cultivar is PERFECT for low chill areas. Sharp Blue SharpBlue Blueberries Tree Saplings NEW for 2009 Best for those with MILD Winter Climates. The Southern Highbush blueberry, Sharpblue (PI 554948) cultivar is a spreading (branching), vigorous, productive, and resistant to canker diseases. It produces tight clusters of medium size, round-oblate, dark blue berries that ripen early with a medium picking scar. The berry flesh is firm with excellent flavor! Hybridized and released in 1975 by the University of Florida by R.H. Sharpe. The Sharpblue variety of blueberry IS the cultivar that all others are compared. Blueberry plants are dioecious plants - having both male and female flowers on the same plant and some claim that you need more than one VARIETY or cultivar, but as long as you have two different plants planted within 20 feet of one another, this will be fine for a full set of berries. Let the bees and other pollinators do their thing and you enjoy the fruits of their labour and yours! This particular cultivar is PERFECT for low chill areas. Over the years within the Agriculture industry, scientists have been doing their best to find the right plants for the right place so as many people as possible can grow their favorites. This is normally accomplished by trial and error and hybridization to allow plants to tolerate more cold or less or allow the fruiting cycle to be shorter or longer etc. There are many factors involved. Therefore, there are many varieties of Blueberries to choose from so we will do our best to provide some choices in the near future. The Sharp Blue variety of Blueberry Fruiting Trees is patented from the University of Florida for commercial growers and can also be enjoyed by the home gardener. Needing only a 150 hours of chill weather to bear blooms for fruit, these are one of the fastest maturing fruiting blueberries plants known. They are also a very delicious medium to large sized fruit to behold. Blue Berry Trees need a very low soil pH of 4-5.5 to grow their best. If the pH gets higher than 5.5 the Blueberries will experience deficiencies in zinc & iron. They need about 2-3% organic matter all the time. Most people use pine bark chips and plant them directly into the pine mulch adding more pine mulch as the trees mature and the older pine material decomposes. In the fall the Blueberry Plants sport a unique and beautiful red foliage. They are easy to grow and will reward any grower with a annual yield of fresh, awesome tasting blueberries. Grow enough and sell them at the farmers market or keep them and make preserves, jellies/jams or use them to bake with into pies, pancakes and cupcakes. Some like to add them to their favorite cereal and some just like to eat them right off the tree. These blue Berry saplings are about 8-10 inches and are young, so START THEM NOW it's the time to plant for next season's Pie contests! Main growing information: Securely anchored rooted plants in very well draining soil, keep Soil pH low at 4 to 5.5 and Full Sun HAVE FUN & ENJOY! Use Pine bark chips for easier soil pH control.
