Healthy Cultivated Florida Native Live Plants for sale at Central Florida Farms Florida Native Plants - This section of the website is under construction and will become available as time permits. Our goal is to preserve the native species of numerous naturally established very wide variety of plants. If you think about it, just about every plant we have in our homes and gardens were once native to some where. Most likely considered by the people in those areas as weeds or common plants of unimportance. Interestingly enough, there are some very unusual and interesting plants I've come across and collected over the last few years that properly grown with purpose, no longer appear as weeds. A man by the name of William Bartram roamed Florida in the early years of the settling of this great nation naming plants. There is a bronze placard down the road from us giving him credit at a 300-400 year old Live Oak tree that has been protected as an historical tree. The placard mentions his path and this was one of his favorite areas according to some research I did a little while ago due to the extreme numbers of different flowering plant species that he found and named. Non-Native Invasive Plants In Florida In Florida, some non-native plants are now escaping their cultivated status that were once bought in garden centers. The Mexican petunia is one that can become very invasive to temperate climates and when people or landscape companies trim their landscapes and gardens and discard them in a vacant, natural lot or wooded area, these plants can take over an area in one or two growing seasons. One such plant that we refuse to sell or cultivate is the Brazilian Pepper Tree. It is a beautiful evergreen tree that bears red berries during the winter months. Here in Florida and even as far north as Jacksonville they are found all over the place. The birds and other animals will eat the red fruit and distribute along their way. The only way to control them is to burn the plants once they have been successfully removed from their planted area. Roots and all. One root from this particular tree will grow right back and at unbelievable rates. Some plants on the invasive species list for Florida (deemed so by the University of Florida and USDA) I do not agree with as being a problem. The Brazilian Pepper is one that I do agree with since it seems that ever seed is viable and needs zero care to become established. If you drive down south on I-95, once you pass Brevard County, you will see these plants along with Australian Pines all along the roadsides. They are far out of control. Neither of these mentioned invasive tree species cannot take deep freezing temperatures, but can stand short periods of lower 20's. Both are beautiful trees but better suited for their own native land. Musacae - Edible Bananas!
