Ferns, Vines, Ground Covers!

Ferns, vines and ground covers offer something that other plants can't. There are many applications among these plants and many varieties to choose from. Some ferns are great in the foreground while others make excellent potted specimens or a perfect plant in the background that nothing else seems to want to grow. Some are even used prolifically by the floral industry. How ever you decide to use them they will bring a wispy beauty about your landscape that no other plants are able to do. Vines on the other hand can be used as house plant, barriers between you and neighbors, covers for mailboxes or gazebos, the ground, the applications are endless! They usually hardy, easy and fool proof plants that will cause you only enjoyable days. While our selection is extremely limited at this time, please keep checking as we grow through the season for new plant varieties on this page.

Sword Fern (Nephrolepis exaltata) A very lush narrow leafed and rapid growing, rapid spreading, easy to grow plant. Similar to Boston Fern but grows taller and erect with the same dark green, fragile looking pinnate leaves. Sword fern is cold hardy to at least 10 degrees before death. If the temps drop below 25, the leaves will burn, but plant roots will live under ground and new fronds will grow when the weather warms and will not stop until a freeze. We had a rare winter a few years ago when the temps dropped to 9 degrees and the ferns just came back at the first signs of spring. They are considered tropical but do take some cold. If grown outdoors in the ground, It is recommended that you use a lawn mower and mow them down just before spring weather. This will force them to spread and grow many new fronds in the place of the old ones. They are more hardy than most people think. These plants grow to heights to 36-40" tall. They are propagated through spores and runners. Easily grown in a basket for your home or in a shady part of your yard. They look great around the base of trees, along the fence line or to cover an area that's bare. Plush looking dark green fern adds color and depth to an area. Best grown in shade but will tolerate a few hours of direct sun per day. The sword fern can take daily rain or weeks of drought once established. These ferns make an excellent erosion control plant and ground cover. A very easy to grow, low maintenance, versatile ground cover!

Foxtail Fern - (Asparagus Meyerii) The roots are bursting out of their containers and are ready to be transplanted into a 2 gallon container (or larger) or ground. I have never seen them die due to the cold. We do not protect them from our sometimes harsh winters. This easy to grow and hardy fern is great for large patio planters or makes a nice presence around the outside of the house. It spreads by runners and seeds that turn red giving a Christmas look and just adds to the tropical look of the environment. The tails can reach lengths of 15 - 28" and are about 2-3 inches in diameter. Creates plush look to your area. An evergreen red seed bearing,  very cold hardy plant that can go to temperature depths of at least 10 degrees Fahrenheit. These plants are about 5-10 inches tall with 4-7 fern fronds each. They should grow extremely rapidly once you have replanted them. Please plant as soon as you receive them.

Confederate Jasmine Vine (Trachelospermum Jasminoides) is a cold tolerant and naturally PEST FREE popular ground cover or fragrant vine that grows fast and with ease! No green thumb? no problem! These are OUT-growing a 1 gallon container and the roots are very well established. It will cover what you want it to cover but is easily controlled. The flowers are small white and extremely fragrant to miles away, smelling similar to orange blossoms. Leaves are shiny dark green. These look great covering  a fence or trellis or making an area of your yard or landscape that you wish to make private from neighbors. Use your imagination and create a covering that is useful or pleasing to the eyes. Pest-free, easy to maintain, drought resistant (once established) and heavenly fragrant, this is probably the south's favorite flowering vine. When grown indoors it will reward with fragrant blossoms if supplied with at least a few hours of sun in the winter. Highly recommended to new gardeners, confederate is easy to grow and satisfies with quick growth and an explosive fragrant floral display all summer long. Fertilize every 6 weeks until winter for best growth.

$25.99 per each one gallon container - vines approx: 2-3 feet long with 1-2 branches

Variegated Confederate Jasmine - Cold Hardy, Drought and Pest resistant - Similar to the above plant but this plant has a wonderful variegation that usually begins as creamy, almost white leaves and gradually fades into it awesome deep variegated leaves as shown in photo below. Use the same care for this as the green variety only this one likes about 10% more shade. It has been known to do well in full sun light for more than half a day. It will grow a slight bit slower than the green due to its lack of green producing photosynthesis, but is still a persistent and steady growing vine that with good soil and moisture content will provide you with intoxicating odorous blooms all summer long!

Kiwifruit Female "Vincent" - Cold Hardy to 10 degrees! This particular cultivar (Vincent) is best suited for the warm temperate conditions of Southern Florida, California and Texas. They need at least 240 frost free days to produce fruit. Since they can be container grown, maybe be over wintered indoors during those days to make it possible to grow this in cooler regions. On top of being a beautiful full leafed climbing vine with red stems, that is cold hardy to about 10 degrees, maybe colder, these wonderful vines can produce some of the best tasting and most popular fruits known.

They grow to about 25-30 feet long and 9-12 feet high and can cover an area 10-12ft wide. They should be trellis trained or grown on a patio wall. They are well suited for a large container. The vines are ornamental and they are welcomed for their great tasting fruit. Being virtually pest and disease free, these make an easy to grow plant! If you are able to create a grape vine structure, this would not only be eye appealing, but provide a stable living space for your Kiwi Plants.

Since these plants need a cold spell to promote fruit and strengthen the plants, they are adaptable to many environments. They are dioecious and need both sex plants to produce fruits. Typically one male per 3 females is adequate. They should be harvest from November 1st – 15th for best fruit. Cold hardy, easy to grow and a beautiful vine makes this a with while addition to your home!

Chartreuse Philodendron Scandens 'Aureum' - I found this awesome colored bright plant a few weeks ago and couldn't resist. The heart shaped leaves begin a creamy white and grow into bright yellow or blinding lime green. Even brighter than Xanthosoma Lime Zinger! I always loved how the variegated and green varieties get very large leaves while climbing trees and trellises, so this one will just blind anyone who dares to look. They will do well as an indoor houseplant as will the variegated pothos so you northern folks can easily have pleasure in this one as well. Outdoor growers in warmer climates (Zone 8b - 11) can experience this magnificent plant climb their tree trunks, walls, patio trellis or anywhere you decide. This also makes an excellent hanging basket plant. Protected under the tree's shade hammock from frost, it should retain its leaves to continue growing the next season. IF left unprotected, it will most likely lose its leaves but retain its structure to begin a fresh set the following season. Cant really go wrong here!
