Red Abyssinian Ventricosum Banana - A Beautiful Monster Ensete "Maurelii" Ventricosum - "Red Abyssinian Banana" Wow, up until the Musa Siam Ruby Banana hit and other than the Musa Ae-Ae Variegated banana plants, this is one of the most sought after Ensete varieties known today! Its imposing stature and deep maroon red/green variegation make it hard to miss in any landscape. Some plants can attain an almost all deep red set of leaves while others sport maroon, white and green variegation. This plant is a seed sport from ensete ventricosum and so gets as large as ventricosum, but with added color. You might get one of these out of every 10,000 seeds, if you're lucky. The ensete banana varieties do not sucker as with a musa variety, so seeds and tissue culture are the only means of propagation. The seeds from the maurelii normally do not produce this beautiful red plant so we mainly rely on tissue culture. Some large plants have been displayed to have some yellow and even white variegation in the leaves, but most will retain their place with the deep red burgundy contrast as seen here. The photo depicts younger plants and will give way to more maroon on the tops of the leave with maturity. Very easy to grow and rapid to get to a large size in any climate. It is somewhat cold hardy and as the ventricosum can stand light freezes & frosts and live, but like all tropicals, can get melted to the ground. Cover with frost cloth, (never use plastic) to protect it and mulch very well and you can enjoy this colorful monster up to zone 7b/8! Actually, they seem to grow faster in cooler spring and fall weather than during the mid summers heat. Now don't you want one of these in display in your world? This photo was taken at night and doesn't reveal the true colors. A new one will be added soon. Ensete Ventricosum bloom shown in the right photo
