Colocasia Elephant Ear Plants

With the exception of Colocasia Gigantea, all Colocasia esculenta plants love wet soils. They will reward you with rapid growth when provided what they love. They like rich soils, but can live in just about any type besides dense clay. If you can't plant them in a bog type area and they do happen to dry out occasionally, then simply use a mulch to hold in the moisture and this should do the trick. Colocasia plants are one of the easiest plants to grow and normally need very little attention. When extra attention is given, you will be able to see the happiness in their vigor.

Colocasia Jack's Giant Elephant Ear Plant - Cold Hardy Zone 7 New Plant introduction for 2008. It's so new, we don't have any official photos of its mature size yet. It looks like colocasia ruffles on steroids. Even at this starter size the leaves are 4" long. It is a known Colocasia to be from India and Asia, but is not known by us if this is a hybrid species or a selection. We know is that it grows extremely large that it closely rivals the size Colocasia gigantea reaching recorded towering heights to at least seven to nine feet with 4 feet long monstrous elephant ear plant with its famous colorful blue green leaves. Time will reveal the plants full attributes.

I believe from experience with Esculentas, growing these directly in the soil instead of a container should reward with the best growth attributes. The Jacks Giant is no exception to the rule when it comes to growing the Colocasia esculenta varieties. The Jack's Giant likes moist soil and can live in bog/marsh situations without issues. I think it would grow larger if planted in a well draining, continually moist area of high in organic matter soil. If grown in colder areas than zone 7, they can be dug up for the winter and stored in a dry cool area until the warmth returns. What a cool plant! Prehistoric sized leaves would make great dinosaur food if we needed that type of thing. We hope to have a photo soon. The applications are endless with this statement making center piece plant that is sure to be admired by all. This plant will be rewarding its owners with rapid growth, low maintenance and very ease of care. You could place a sign in your garden gate that warns to beware of the giant plants. If you don't have room for this one, MAKE room!

Colocasia Hawaiian Royal Hilo Zone 7-11  - Amazing Looking New Colocasia Plant! - Very recently introduced to cultivation this hybrid plant was derived from years of hard work combined with trial and error research having a proven a "blood line" of Hawaiian colocasias. After much debate and struggle to release these to the public, this vivid colocasia has finally been released for trade.

The Colocasia Royal Hilo is a beautiful, extremely fast growing, clumping plant who's leaves are matte green with lightly accented veins with the trademark esculenta dot in center on the upper side and has deep dark veins on the underside with the color running into the stems. The leaves actually resemble that of a rounded leafed Alocasia species when more mature. The stems however are a stunning deep red/maroon stripe on cream colored white similar to a candy cane. They reach large sizes like most esculenta varieties do with leaves of 2 feet long almost as wide with an overall maximum potential height of 5-6 feet. The stems are strong holding up these beautiful leaves even through an occasional windy day. Creates an excellent accent plant among your other green and dark favorite varieties! Very easy to care for and can be an excellent bog plant. They will form a bulb as they grow, so if need be, can be dug for winter storage/salvation. New information tidbit - February 28th around 2am it was 31ºF and ours that are outdoors under a water oak tree were untouched by the cold weather. Good news for those of you in colder regions!

Colocasia "Ele Paio" Variegated (Milky Way) Zone 7-11  - Newly introduced to homes in mid 2005 is this very awesome variegated plant that is as easy to grow as are the rest of the colocasia family plants. Originally only available to Hawaiian Royalty, now we have the pleasure. The best part is that you'll have a variegated version of your much loved elephant ear plants. The plants push out new leaves continually throughout the growing season, each with a new un-uniformed variegated design. The variegations range from splattered (or) speckled with white paint to a pure white leaf and stem. Each new leaf will be different as there is no consistency in the markings. They are extremely fast growing plants that love rich,  moist, compost type soil and a pond or bog environment. As an esculenta cultivar, it is a very fool proof plant that all will admire! If you re looking to upgrade your garden with something spectacular, I would say this a good choice!

Colocasia Gigantea "The largest Colocasia in the World! " Cold Hardy to zone 7b! Asian Cultivar! Definitely not a C. Esculenta variety. This one rivals the Borneo Giant in size and is just as easy to grow! Even the leaf structure resembles that of the Alocasia. Folks that have had the rare opportunity to own these know what I'm talking about. Now you can be an owner of this magnificent plant too! These are very easy to grow and require very little attention as does most of the colocasia family. The leaves themselves can grow to five FEET long and four FEET wide and are very rounded resembling the leaves of an Alocasia species! That's just the leaves! The powder white stems will push the huge leaves into the air and make this dinosaur a giant in your yard! How large they grow is determined by your climate zone and growing season, but they will come back every year larger than before, picking up where they left off. They can be over wintered by protecting the bulbs/root stock to pick up right where they left off the season prior. They are cold hardy to zone 7b but can be dug up in colder climates to be over-wintered. This is just an AWESOME HUGE ELEPHANT EAR PLANT! Add this to your collection and be enjoy! These are growing extremely rapidly! LIMITED!

Colocasia Esculenta Midnight - Colocasia esculenta family Zone 8 - Extreme Darkness! Cold Hardy, Easy Care! This plant was introduced to us all last year about late November 2006. Being a unique small cultivar, they only reach compact heights of about 2-2.5 ft and the leaves get about 6-8" long. The stems are as dark as the leaves! These are extremely noticeable when they get into the path of your eyes. They are just so deep of a purple that they look very, very black. Much darker than the Colocasia Black Magic elephant ear plant, and a lot smaller. The stems are near black, the leaves are velvety smokey dusty black and they give a slight downward curl at the leaf edges.

When the sun hits them just right you can see all the purple in them, but they are extremely dark pigmented. They just fit anywhere you place them. Another clumping bog or plant that can take a few freezes each year without totally dying out your land. Because it is a clumper, it is can be considered non-invasive and easily controlled. Adds a striking contrast anywhere you place them, even among other dark plant varieties. Due to their size, they make an excellent house plant, certainly a great patio or container plant to place around the exterior of your home. I know that everyone went nuts over these at the 2007 TPIE show and plants sold out almost immediately. You don't need a green thumb to keep this plant showing off its spectacular foliage and can enjoy it year round! A Plant Collectors Dream! Click the photo for larger image.

Colocasia Elena - Zones 7b-11 - Cold Hardy bright Beauties! The Bright Chartreuse Elephant Ear plant! These are a new introduction from Mid 2006 and are stable beauties. They are the colocasia form that is similar to a Big Mafaffa Xanthosoma plant. There of course are some differences: The leaves are shaped as most colocasias, the veins are light coming together at the point of the stem with the esculenta purple dot. The dot usually forms a "V" shape as it matures. They get as large as the rest reaching 4-6 feet and love wet feet (lots of water), rich humus soils and bright light. They are fast growing and cold hardy as the rest of the colocasia varieties. You can't go wrong here unless you don't like the vivid yellow colors blinding your eyes. They were one of the plants that caught the eyes of all who attended this past TPIE show in Ft Lauderdale. How can you miss these? They will not blend into your landscape but will certainly accent any place bringing everyone's focus of attention to themselves and that area. Just an awesome new found plant wonder!

Colocasia nancyana (Nancy's Revenge) Zone 7-11  - Being one of the most unique of all Colocasia esculenta leaves, this amazing plant has five variations of the variegated leaf pattern depending on the time of year and temperature. The shield pattern is produced during the summer blooming cycle, while the white veining in the leaves occurs in the fall following production of the shield leaves. The young plants and leaves are a solid green like the regular Esculenta variety early in season, but as as the summer progresses the white "Y" pattern becomes exceedingly visible and the variegation oozes into the leaves until the cold weather. The plants grow 5 - 6+ft and is sure to be one your favorites among your garden. Information and photos provided by "Nancy McDaniels".

Colocasia "Ruffles"  Zone 7-11  - (see pic at top of page) Cold Hardy! The daddy of them all? very hardy and rapid growing Elephant Ear plant. Similar to the Xanthosomas but do not get as large. The Colocasia Esculenta grow well in completely covered by water "wet feet" to moist rich soil producing dark green with hints of light green on the leaves that have a velvety look. The leaves are ruffled as they grow larger and when younger have a deep maroon dot in the middle of leaf going down stem about 2-4 inches. Very beautiful! They grow to heights of 5-6ft (larger in best conditions). These plants do well indoors as long as adequate lighting is provided but are better grown outside due to their size. They most likely will not reach their maximum size indoors unless it is a large, well lighted glass house type lobby or similar. Leaves grow to 2-3' spans. Still very nice size plants! They work well for patios or as an entranceway plant, a border plant around larger trees and look great along the side of the house to cover up certain, needed architectural designs. If you have enough, they would make a great wall between you and your neighbors yard. These also make excellent pond plants as they can grow directly in water or as a marginal plant. They catch the eyes of all and add a tropical look and feel to the home. The C. Esculenta spread via runners. Outside these plants begin their very rapid growth as soon as the weather warms up and grow until the weather gets below 60 degrees. The leaves flourish in full sun to deep shade. They do better in shade if watering occasionally, but if grown in full sun, they need a constant supply of water to grow large. They withstand the cold if left in the ground but should be dug up and stored in the northern areas during the cold season just incase. It makes a certain tropical statement around the pool deck, under some old trees, along a fence, in or beside the pond or around the house. They do not need fertilizer, but when properly fed, these plants will grow faster than you can keep up with. These are not from tissue culture

Colocasia esculenta Black Ruffles - an Awesome plant to behold! They are different than Black Runners, they are like a combination of the Colocasia Midnight and green ruffles with a deep dark velvety leaf on the upper side and a flipside lighter color underside. When the light breezes of summer run through these plants, they will flash their colors for you. These are the same size and grow in the same conditions as the popular Green variety of Colocasia Ruffles to 5-6 feet tall and large wavy, sagittate leaves, but are a rich, deep purple/back instead of green. They grow the same in everyway. Full sun to partial shade, cold hardy and very easy to grow. They love fertilizer and do well in pond or bog situations with a lot of water. Or even once established, can take mild droughts, but if you can, give 'em some water. Enjoy these colorful plants that dramatically contrast your landscape! Every plant lover who notices will be asking for pups when they are ready. These are one of my favorites because of the ease of care, can be placed anywhere and the color contrasts any scenery. Plus they get very large and I love large leafed tropical plants!

     Colocasia Black Ruffles

$25.95 per each Colocasia Black Ruffle starter Plants growing height is 10-12"

Black Magic Elephant Ear Colocasia - Zone 7 and higher. Stunning contrast to your green or variegated landscape. Being extremely fast growing, these get as large as the other Colocasia esculenta varieties, but are purplish black throughout the plant. The leaves will open as a light green then change to deep dark purple as they get more light. In midstream of the color change they pass through blotches of reds and orange colors. They need full sun or at least 80% sunlight to stay their black color, otherwise they will stay light green in color with dark purple/black vein outline and stems. Grows to 6' high and you should make room for them clump. They spread via offsets producing many new plants adoring the warm seasons. So plant a few and get a nice small bed in a couple years. Easy to control or move around to place in a different location and being that they are clumping, they are not invasive. If you place these in the midst of any green leaf site, they will add a striking tropical feel. Very easy to grow, cool and unusual plants. Everyone always asks me about these when they see them. They are different from Black runners, they clump near the base of the plant and do not send runners. These are the true "Black Magic elephant Ear Plants.

Colocasia Esculenta Minor "Blue" - Cold Hardy to Zone 7-11 - Mini Blue Colocasia Elephant Ears! Central Florida Farms Exclusive! Leaves are a matte, dark blue-green-grey hue on grass green stems. I found these a few years ago naturalized in Florida at a neighbors property and have planted them in two different locations. I carefully monitored them, giving them much fertilizer and as much care as possible to see if they grew any taller than how I found them near the end of the summer. Most didn't even go dormant here for the winter. A few of the largest plants have only reached 3 feet tall. Most of them stay around 2 1/2 ft with a select few stretching to 3ft.

These look similar to the large C. Esculenta but the leaves rarely get over 8-10 inches long and about 4-6 inches wide and are much more blue in appearance. The total maximum height is about 2 1/2 ft tall. Since the roots on these like to grow deep (about 4-6 inches) they are extremely cold hardy and after the winter will be right back where you left them (one of the first plants to come back from the cold season). The tops of the leaves are a matte light bluish-green with slightly wavy/undulate edges. Some of the leaves sport lighter, more pronounced veins. The stems are predominately green with a few having a small amount of maroon on them as is consistent with C. esculenta.

Makes an excellent potted specimen and will fill a container in no time from just a handful of plants! These would also be ideal for around your larger elephant ear collection, especially in the midst of the taller true greens or odd colored plants. They propagate via runners and clumping from the parent plants. From a short distance they would fill in any empty or low areas of your tropical scape. They also make an excellent pond plant and will grow directly in water or continually moist soil or bog. To plant directly in a pond or water body, they should be planted in small pots (about 4x4") with heavy soil and keep them about 3-4 inches under the pond's surface. The fish if any will fertilize them naturally and you will enjoy these plants all summer long! The Colocasias really don't need any fertilizer to grow well but do respond to it as any other plant will. They love full sun and once established, even though they can grow directly in water, they can also stand moderate periods of drought. These elephant ears described here are well rooted plant pups and will be shipped with outer most leaves trimmed, bare root wet. They will begin growing almost immediately upon your planting them. All naturally propagated.

These plants available here are fully established and are not in tissue culture yet, but strong growing offsets from mother plants.

Colocasia Esculenta Red Stem Taro - Cold Hardy to Zone 7 - These striking Burgundy/Maroon, Red Stemmed Colocasias grow to about 5-6 feet tall with huge blue-green leaves and like rich, moist soil, warmth and humidity. the newest leaves are brighter green turning darker as they mature. Some stems begin light green then go through a bright red phase as they mature to their final deep rich color. They are a perfect bog plant and certainly add color and character to your land or aqua-scape. They will stick out like a sore thumb among the green plants. Mixed in with a colorful arrangement of plants, they will add that certain something that may seem to be missing. They look great with blue stemmed taro (Xanthosoma Violaceum) or the Nancyana, (aka.) Nancy's Revenge. They will bring out the best in your arrangement no matter where you place them. These are hardy plants that can live in full sun to shade and are unlike any other colocasia variety! Like most other colocasias, they tend to set themselves deep into the soil when growing and some do form a tuber and some do not. It depends on the plant's mood I guess. Either way, if you have these magnificent deep red stemmed elephant ears and you live in weather that drops a little below freezing for short periods at a time, these plants should do very well for you and come back as soon as the weather warms up. They will be among the first to show signs of life when the weather does warm up and will also begin growing from where they left off. If you live in colder regions, they can be brought indoors for the winters and placed back outside when its safe. Out of Item

Colocasia Tea / Coffee "Cups" - Also called Big Dipper - Here is a very unusual plant in the colocasia esculenta family. It is said to reach over 6 ft tall and leaves just like pictured about 1.5-2 feet long and proportionally as wide. The stems are deep burgundy color almost black and the leaves are dark dark purple similar to a black magic color. They curve up to even hold water pointing at a 45 degree angle. This plant loves the moist soil like the rest of its family and will soak up the sun if provided a good supply of water. Other than being very oddly leafed, this one will enjoy the same conditions as the rest of the esculenta varieties do and give much pleasure to those who get to enjoy their contrast and strange leaf shape. If you don't have this one, you wont be disappointed that you've planted this gem among your favorites. Don't miss out!

-= Other Special Plants =-

Amorphophallus titanum (Titan Arum, Bunga Bangkai or "Corpse flower") - Tropical Keep Warm - Not Everyone has one of these peeking up from their yard. No matter what you decide to call it (some even name theirs), there will be no mistake on what it is or ever detract attention from all who look upon its magnificent appearance. Best kept in a greenhouse environment unless you live in a tropical zone 10 conditions, these unrealistic plants just ooze oddity displaying the largest true flower in the world. While not in bloom and this will for a good length of time), you can enjoy its dark green unusual leafy lobed vegetation that should grow to 10 feet tall on a tree like stem. As a member of the aroid family, its not a difficult plant to grow and anyone with slightly green thumb should be able to enjoy this and anticipate its bloom. When you do get yours to bloom, you should alert the media as it could attract world wide attention (not to mention the neighbors as it emits its odorous perfume). That is an understatement of course as this flowers odor is described as a repulsive, "rotting-fish-with-burnt-sugar" scent to attract the plant's pollinators. Willing to put up with this a few diligent folks have had to cover their nose. You should have excellent results nurturing this giant aroid by growing it in bright indirect light with moist, rich in compost, well draining soil, high humidity and a regular supply of fertilizer. They are actually very easy to grow, but are sensitive to steady weather below 50 and will usually begin dying down for the season. You will notice this by the yellow droopy leaves. If in a warmer area you can wait until the stems have fallen over then their bulbs should be dug up and stored dry and cool. When it becomes massive and has a trunk about 8 inches in caliper (and larger) and actually gives you shade from its gigantic one leaf, look out if it does go dormant. It will create something of a mess, but is certainly worth it while it is standing tall. When it is this large, the tuber should be about as big as a football or more.  They will not die, but will come back the following spring. Although they are a tropical plant, they can take a little cold without death. Ours survived last two seasons of short freezes, protected in under the hammock of the oaks. They went dormant, but lived. These have not gone dormant for the winter and may or may not. Its now June and a few are coming back from winter and a few never left us. It is not an exact science to say when they do or don't.

Mandela's Bird of paradise - Strelitzia reginae Gold Variety - Zones 8b-11 - Cold Hardy and Easy to Care for! New for 2008! We have been nurturing these plants that were grown from seed from late 2006. They are the coveted Mandelas Golden bird of paradise. The leaves are deep green and the plants tend to clump and then form their beautiful golden, red, pink hued and blue blooms! It's like yellow crested birds poking their necks out of the bushes. The Plants grow to about 5 feet tall and just as wide and are surprisingly faster growing than I originally thought. Definitely makes for a beautiful flower and could be placed at either side of your entrance way or lanai. They are perfect as a potted plant or outside just under the window sill as a mid foreground plant. Flowers are said to be long lasting making an excellent cut flower inventory plant. Anywhere you place these, they will show off a bright yellow crown with deep blue hues in the 'head' of the birds. These are not very common yet so here's your chance to obtain an awesome variety of Strelitzia reginae family plant. Like all of these plants in this family, they like a moist well drained soil and bright light to do their best. Once established they will be able to stand more drought if needed. They do seem to be neglect proof as we try to find out with at least one plant from each category. Ours are growing in about 50% shade so be sure to acclimate if you plan on placing them in full sun.      Faustino's Giant AnthuriumAnthurium faustmirandae Largest Leafed Anthurium! This Cold Hardy and fast growing anthurium is one of the easiest to grow. It doesn't seem to want to stop for any reason! Can take neglect and is a great beginners plant or would make an excellent office corner plant if you have a window view. A 2005 introduced large specimen plant from inside Mexico. This beauty's leaves grow to be one of the largest round heart-shaped form of Anthuriums found today and are pretty fast growing. I have found that during the growing season they spit out a new leaf about every 2-3 weeks. They are a hardy plant with a stiff, leathery cardboard type structure, green, heart-shaped leaves and stems. The new growth has a reddish gold tone and a brilliant gloss until it begins to reach its maximum size. The next size leaf should be larger than the previous each new leaf. The leaves grow to 2+ feet in diameter! Now that's a healthy sized plant leaf! These plants can take abuse and will just keep on growing for you whether you like it or not in hot, cold, wet or dry. A very unusual & cool plant! Although grow seems to stop or slow drastically during weather below 50, these take the cold weather VERY well! Even through freeze level or close and its safe to say a couple degrees here and there below freezing. Ours have never died down for winter and we always get below 28ºF temperatures a few times a year. They just go dormant. Don't get me wrong, I would still protect them from frosts and freezes when possible.

These like many bromeliads can be placed pretty much anywhere to grow; like in the fork of a tree or in the ground, in containers, hanging baskets, top of a fence, rock crevices, the list goes on as your imagination takes hold. These are very easy to grow and cannot disappoint you unless you're impatient about its bloom. In the meantime, you'll enjoy a wonderful gigantic, Jurassic plant for your show.    v Chartreuse Philodendron Scandens 'Aureum' - I found this awesome colored bright plant a few weeks ago and couldn't resist. The heart shaped leaves begin a creamy white and grow into bright yellow or blinding lime green. Even brighter than Xanthosoma Lime Zinger! I always loved how the variegated and green varieties get very large leaves while climbing trees and trellises, so this one will just blind anyone who dares to look. They will do well as an indoor houseplant as will the variegated pothos so you northern folks can easily have pleasure in this one as well. Outdoor growers in warmer climates (Zone 8b - 11) can experience this magnificent plant climb their tree trunks, walls, patio trellis or anywhere you decide. This also makes an excellent hanging basket plant. Protected under the tree's shade hammock from frost, it should retain its leaves to continue growing the next season. IF left unprotected, it will most likely lose its leaves but retain its structure to begin a fresh set the following season. Cant really go wrong here! These do best where they can climb up a tree in the sunniest position.

Cyrtosperma Johnstonii Zone 9b -11 Collectors Choice! This truly tropical aroid is not very well known, but a few in the plant's genus have been used as a food source in warm countries such as Malaysia and other parts by its native dwellers. This beautiful plant will be the talk of your collection and those who look upon it will most certainly want one as well. The succulent stems are deeply mottled in a dark green color over a lighter translucent background with curved thorns growing up and down from the leaf to the roots, this is very unusual for a succulent aroid stem. These grow to heights of at least 4-5 feet and probably taller with leaves 2-3 feet in length and almost as wide. The shape of the leaf is almost a perfect triangle with sharply pointed tips when mature and very pronounced red veins over deeper greens. See the photos below of a mid size adult plant. The hooded inflorescence is black on the outside with a cream colored interior adding even more contrast. The flowers are fully bi-sexual. This is not a Colocasia but I am placing on a few pages so everyone will have a chance to own this awesome newly introduced plant! They really are sensitive to weather below 45, they will begin to decline and give up the ghost. They can be protected it when you see it comin.

It needs moist and warm conditions to thrive (being found in swampy conditions) and should be kept in partial shade. Bright indirect light will be excellent to grow this magnificent plant. The underground creeping rhizome will allow this plant to produce pups if taken care of properly but is not invasive. This plant should be brought indoors and protected from temperatures below 45 degrees. Besides that it is one of the most interesting plants I've come across in a while & it is A Very fast & EASY to grow plant!

Remusatia Pumila - An interesting plant! The leaves are contrasting darker outlining the veins with light green undersides. They grow to heights of about 10-12" tall. These epiphytic plants grow high in the trees clinging onto its host. They are extremely easy to grow and resemble a miniature alocasia species. They can be potted up and grown indoors or planted in the same manner as a stag horn fern or any other epiphyte. They require moist roots so keeping potted in a Canadian peat soil mix is recommended for easier care. They like bright shade to do their best. The propagate via small runners with a sticky bulbous all along the way that would normally cling to birds and tree mammals to be distributed throughout its habitat. Works well in a dish garden or other indoor arrangement. A small plant that will fit anywhere you place it.
