Black Magic Elephant Ear Colocasia - Zone 7 and higher. Stunning contrast to your green or variegated landscape. being extremely fast growing, these get as large as the other colocasia Esculenta varieties but are purplish black throughout the plant. The leaves will open as a light green then change to deep dark purple as they get more light. In midstream of the color change they pass through blotches of reds and orange colors. They need full sun or at least 80% sunlight to stay their black color, otherwise they will stay light green in color with dark purple/black vein outline and stems. Grows to 6' high and you should make room for them clump. They spread via offsets producing many new plants adoring the warm seasons. So plant a few and get a nice small bed in a couple years. Easy to control or move around to place in a different location and being that they are clumping, they are not invasive. If you place these in the midst of any green leaf site, they will add a striking tropical feel. Very easy to grow, cool and unusual plants. Everyone always asks me about these when they see them. These are a tissue cultured plant but all have a well rooted one gallon root system now. These are different from Black runners, they clump near the base of the plant and do not send runners. These are the true "Black Magic elephant Ear Plants.
