Cold Hardy, Gigantic Flowering Banana Plants! Musa Balbisiana Banana - Cold Hardy! An Obscure and exciting Banana from North-east India, the Musa Balbisiana is thought to be one of the progenitors of the commercial banana. It grows at high altitudes, so may very well tolerate extreme cold conditions, but its main characteristic is its huge red flower. We know here that it can definitely take cold weather to temperatures of at least 28ºF. They are protected from frosts, but the plants didn't even weep during our few freezes this year. The fruit is edible, but full of seeds that can be planted when you get this to bloom. As with others in the genus, rich soil is required for maximum growth together with plenty of fertilizer and an adequate supply of water. It is a very fats growing and hardy banana plant. They do well in shade or full sun. In full sun, they will need moist soil to look their best. Mulching should be applied to help keep the moisture to the roots and corms. They produce pups and should reward you with babies as much as the Orinoco banana plant. We like to keep ours in about 50% shade, it makes the leaves stay green plus protects them from frosts. They also do not need as much watering when grown this way. Banana plants will bloom in shady conditions as we witness here every summer and fall. So getting this magnificent plant to bloom next season (or maybe this one) should not be much of an issue if you do plan on growing in shadier areas. As far as ornamental banana plants go, this is one of my favorites as it gives us the beauty of its huge flower and mega-tropical appearance. Enjoy! Sold $0.00 ea Musa Balbisiana plant 3-4 feet tall. Growing fast, get them while they last!
