Titan Arum Amorphophallus titanum (Titan Arum, Bunga Bangkai or "Corpse flower") - Rare and Lauded by the media in magazine articles, television and major horticulture events as the most spectacular flower in the world, this plant has been in the news probably more than any other flowering ornamental. It has a lot of common names, but no matter what you decide to call it (some even name theirs), there will be no mistake on what it is or ever detract attention from all who look upon its magnificent appearance. Best kept in a greenhouse environment unless you live in a tropical zone 10 conditions, these unrealistic plants just ooze oddity displaying the largest true flower in the world. While not in bloom (and this will be the case for a good length of time), you can enjoy its dark green unusual leafy lobed vegetation that should grow to 10 feet tall on a tree like stem. The stem resembles a hollow trunk when LIGHTLY tapped with the entire palm of your hand. Similar to how a water melon feels when lightly tapped on the same way. When they are as tall they get before blooming, they are equally spectacular (as shown in the Photo on the right below) and will produce shade being so large. The photo really doesn't give it any perspective as to the size. I have a photo with my wife in it next to one that had a HUGE tuber, but I cannot find it. It most likely was as tall as the one shown below. As a member of the aroid family, its not a difficult plant to grow in the least, and anyone with slightly green thumb should be able to enjoy this and anticipate its bloom. When you do get yours to bloom, ( no one really knows) and you should alert the media as it could attract world wide attention (not to mention the neighbors as it emits its odorous perfume). That is an understatement of course as this flowers odor is described as a repulsive, "rotting fish or flesh with a burnt sugar" scent to attract the plant's pollinators. Once it flowers, it WILL bear seeds if cared for due to the pollinators will not be able to resist the odor. Your neighbors may call the police (or you if they're nice) wondering what that odor is that's seeping around. They don't call it the corpse flower for nothing. A very minor thing to deal with if yours does happen to bloom. At least in my opinion. Willing to put up with this a few diligent folks have had to cover their nose. You should have excellent results nurturing this giant aroid by growing it in bright indirect light with moist, rich in compost, well draining soil, high humidity and a regular supply of fertilizer. There is really no way the photo on the right below can bring out the true feel unless you were actually standing under it. From this glimpse it appears to look as any other cool tropical. Once you actually stand under one this size (most likely about 5-8 years old) you will feel its tree like presence as you are shaded and towered by its ONE gigantic leaf. The ones offered here have not gone dormant for the season yet. They may or may not, depends on what they feel like doing really. There seems to be no known reason for when they go dormant. The tubers on the ones pictured below are most likely about 40-50 pounds or more in weight and very large. Ours went dormant in late 2008 but were green and up in 2007. There are only 3 left in stock for 2009 until we can find more plants. When they do revive (and they will), they should be between 10-15" tall from this size corm.
