Alocasia Odora - Upright Gigantic Elephant Ear Plants Alocasia Odora - Zones 7b and warmer. The Cold Hardy & neglect proof Alocasia odora is one of the first of the alocasia species to be introduced into mainstream culture and homes some years ago. Many photos reveal their clumping growth pattern and if allowed to grow in this manner will make the plants stay smallish. When you grow them single and give them space, they will get gigantic pushing their plush leaves higher up into the air on the thick corm tubers. The veins are wide, and there are fewer of them compared to its cousin the A. california (gagaena). Sadly, this plant seems to have lost its attraction and excitement, but not really sure why. Maybe due to the influx of all the other exciting alocasia species that have come available in recent years? Why deprive yourself of this giant beautiful staple in your landscape? To me, it is still one of the most beautiful green varieties of giant upright elephant ear plants that there is with its rounded heart shaped leaves and perfume scented lily like flowers. hey differ from the macrorrhiza in that the macrorrhiza lobes are pointed and these are rounded, but not as rounded as the Borneo Giant. They have been used in a number of successful hybrid projects to cross pollinate and produce new stable hybrid plants due to their size, ease of growth and cold hardiness. They make a bold statement in any landscape and can easily be overwintered in northern areas indoors so that the corm does not go dormant as dried bulbs. This will make it come back to life rapidly in spring and just continue growing like it never stopped. The odora has very wide, dark green leaves that are rounded on the end lobes and the leaves stick straight up throughout their life. The older the plant gets, the larger the leaves, the more quilted and puckered in appearance and darker the color. Maybe they've been placed on the backburner due to the fact that everyone has them? I am just making a guess. They are a must for the avid large leafed elephant ear plant collector and grower. So we have them here for your enjoyment and future as a possible landscape specimen plant. These plants can live directly in shallow water or well drained soil that experiences a short drought. They are resilient and neglect proof once they are established. They will produce offsets at the plant's base, but are not invasive at all. Take one of these awesome plants home with you today so tomorrow you may have your eyes pleased with its beauty! These plants truly add life and vitality to any garden or landscape.
