"Solid Gold" Upright Elephant Ear Plant Alocasia Macrorrhiza Lutea - Common Name - 'Solid Gold" Zones 9 and up. This plant is also been sold under the name "seven Colors" as some of the Luteas will produce yellow splashes of leaves with variants of off colors in the stems and veins or darker more contrasting leaves. Truth is, they are the same plant. Alocasia Macrorrhiza 'Lutea' is from Papua New Guinea and has leaves which are a pronounced undulate at the margins and are deep dark green with a yellow veins and vivid yellow stems. A little different from its cousin Alocasia New Guinea Gold, this cultivar is distinguished by its brilliant, vivid yellow (sometimes orange in color) petioles. The inflorescence has a yellow peduncle and a canary-yellow spathe. This has been sold in the past under the name Alocasia 'Gold' or 'Solid Gold' and rightly so. Since the stems and veins are chartreuse, this is where the Latin term Lutea (yellow) comes into play here. They grow to about 5-6 feet tall (maybe larger in warm climates?) on stiff upright leaves. Being a cultivar of the Macrorrhiza family, you shouldn't expect less. The more light these receive, the brighter the stem and the darker the leaf will be. Young plants are more green until they get a few leaves and are exposed to more sun light. They are slower growing than the regular Macrorrhiza but when grown in well lit areas, will still grow fast enough to satisfy any gardener with precious regular new foliage. This plant is definitely not suited for the indoor home unless it is during cold spells of the year. There are only a few this year & normally sell at much higher prices, so get while the gettin's good. The plants available are not from tissue culture but are pups from the mother plants. This plant lives among my favorites of all in the landscape! Plants grow to 5-6+ feet! More Photos (click for larger Images) $0.00 ea Alocasia Lutea
