Alocasia lauterbachiana - Grows 5-6 ft Tall! No common name yet, so we thought it should be called Alocasia Sword. These plants when even halfway mature will produce a "WOW look at that" when first seen. At least that's what I thought (probably said it out loud) when I first saw the Alocasia lauterbachiana in a photo and again when it was finally available a year later. Talk about a unique alocasia species. These slender leafed aroids reach heights of about 5-6 ft, a thickly girthed plant base with a dark pale green upper side, raised veins and a striking dark earth toned maroon red / purple leaf underside. Their knife bladed, undulate appearance is an excellent addition to the overall look. They are easy to grow and respond well to fertilizer. They are fast growing like the Macrorrhiza or Odora. These plants certainly earn their place in the Jurassic category and will spice up your landscape with a special colorful look that can't be missed. I am not 100% sure of the maximum cold hardy status in colder areas than us. Safely, I would say zone 8 with protection going by our areas results the last two seasons.
