Alocasia Maechang - The delicate and beautiful Alocasia! Alocasia hypnosa - Zones 8 and up - Cold Hardy! Also known as A. Maechang. What a really cool find here! These plants are known to grow to at least 3-4 feet tall with very scalloped leaf edges. The leaves (despite some of the photos) are very proportionate, large and slightly rounded looking overall reaching at least 2 feet in length and nearly as wide. The end lobes are widely spaced and are extra segmented like that of the A. macrorrhiza Borneo Giant. The deep, dark green colored leaves shine between glossy and matte and feel fleshy soft to the touch. The bloom on these are one of a kind! They are very delicate in appearance with pink to purple hues finally revealing its reproductive organs, but the hood doesn't open fully like most Alocasia species. The blooms are also short lived, lasting about 1 day opened, rising up about 1.5 feet out of the base of the plant. So far, we have only witnessed one bloom per session, per plant. Time will reveal if they bloom more often or with more petioles per bloom. Very unique and very pretty! I imagine that these will sell out rapidly at this size and we only have a few available at this time. We took these photos to show all aspects of this plant. These plants available have a bulb/corm about as large a baseball. Don't miss out! These are very large plants that are available to purchase today and reserve for shipping in August. Winter care: They do have a winter dormancy period and when first emerging for the season, the first shoot is very deep maroon/purple coming from its corm (this in itself is unusual for a green alocasia), unfurling to a beautiful scalloped edged leaf. Very soon after the spring emergence, the plants soon begin producing long runners similar to a Colocasia plant, but the runner look different with more segments to them and are delicate looking. So far, ours have not produced any pups yet, but were being hopeful and monitoring them. The corms should be dug up for winter in areas where temps stay in the freezing range for more than a week at a time, leaves trimmed to the corm, kept in a dry area and placed back outdoors after the last frost in Spring. We obtained these during this past winter and they were outside riding low temperatures of low 30's and at least one freezing night. They did not get damaged, they just stayed dormant to come out and show significant growth taking advantage of any warm temperatures. Ours have only been grown in containers and the plants may get larger if grown directly in the soil. We have 2 planted in ground to experiment and we'll see if they do get larger than 3-4 feet. I think it will be bigger going by the observation that most aroids grow larger after they blooming for the season.
